It was one of those things that was so hideous I started liking it. But I have always been a big fan of the inclusion of red in the Pirates color scheme. Maybe just not thaaaat much red.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04854315904173219584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9108520133795628754.post-60269124751854831302016-02-21T13:01:05.517-05:002016-02-21T13:01:05.517-05:00Yep, you're spot on. 1998 was the last year f...Yep, you're spot on. 1998 was the last year for Donruss under the Pinnacle umbrella. The company filed for bankruptcy, and was bought up by Playoff (which also ended up with Score and Leaf brands). Playoff got a baseball license in 2001, and brought back the Donruss name in baseball.

2001 Donruss (which is hands down one of my favorite products of all-time) had an outer pack and an inner pack. The outer pack had the 2001 cards, and then the inner pack had one card from 1999 and 2000 retro sets. I believe the 1999 versions were in hobby packs, and the 2000's in retail...but I could be mixing that up.

The retro sets were essentially full sets in and of themselves - all the stars, serial numbered rookies, Stat Line parallels for each card, and a couple of retro Diamond Kings inserts for each set. It made for a really fun break, and packs were only $1.99.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04854315904173219584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9108520133795628754.post-36377271629979459662016-02-21T10:39:28.504-05:002016-02-21T10:39:28.504-05:00Great work, as usual! If my memory serves me correctly, I believe 1998 was their last set and then they came back in 2001 and issued some cards using designs they would've used in 1999 and 2000 and I believe the design you used for the Cole card might have been one of them or perhaps for an insert set that year.
