But I think you do have a great point - it's a bittersweet reminder of how much hobby values have tanked. Cards that were once the hottest thing out there now end up en masse in dime or quarter boxes.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04854315904173219584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9108520133795628754.post-26599144117102219192015-09-05T02:14:53.695-04:002015-09-05T02:14:53.695-04:00I don’t see 85T McGwires on a regular basis… but I...I don’t see 85T McGwires on a regular basis… but I do see Bonds and Griffey rookie cards every now and then at shows and flea markets around here (Bay Area). I actually have mixed emotions when I see guys like Barry Larkin, Will Clark, Bo Jackson, and Randy Johnson sitting in quarter bins… or guys like Bonds and Griffey in local dollar boxes. On one hand… I feel like they’re great deals. But on the other hand, it’s a reminder of just how far their values have fallen over the years.Fujihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00749100861086458307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9108520133795628754.post-23154252034997837232015-09-04T19:31:20.201-04:002015-09-04T19:31:20.201-04:00Same here. But I'd love to grab relatively common hobby staples like a McGwire, Griffey, etc in person. Maybe I'm in the minority, though.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04854315904173219584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9108520133795628754.post-20183468422880590742015-09-04T19:30:16.161-04:002015-09-04T19:30:16.161-04:00I've definitely come across the "80's...I've definitely come across the "80's/90's cards are worthless" school of thought. Showcase space is limited. But I've dug through hundreds of boxes. I can't buy that throwing in a Bonds RC into your $1 box or a McGwire into the $5 box won't be just as desirable as the junk gu/autos I flip past.

I guess the hobby is always tied up in the "latest and greatest."Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04854315904173219584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9108520133795628754.post-50875713315788558832015-09-03T23:58:38.034-04:002015-09-03T23:58:38.034-04:00Now that I think of it, I don't think I've...Now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever seen an '89 UD Griffey rookie at a show. One of my pipe dreams is to find a ragged copy for a few bucks in a discount box, but, with its rarity at card shows, I doubt that'll happen any time soon.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13508921644099472101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9108520133795628754.post-67198016255084669082015-09-03T15:34:28.899-04:002015-09-03T15:34:28.899-04:00Agreed, Brian. I've noticed that some of the vendors at my local show bring more Brewers than they ever should bring because I buy them.Tony L.https://www.blogger.com/profile/01349226671097456632noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9108520133795628754.post-59014508507698840072015-09-03T13:53:38.377-04:002015-09-03T13:53:38.377-04:00Anytime I ask a vendor at a show about a card they...Anytime I ask a vendor at a show about a card they don't have from the 80s or 90s, they tell me they "probably" have 20 or 30 copies of that particular card in a box somewhere, but it's not worth bringing to the show because they "can't bring everything" and no one wants that stuff. There is a limited amount of space at shows, and they are there to sell things that will at least get the money back they spent to have the table in the show. So, yeah, I get it. The vendors that I tend to like the most will take the time to write down cards I ask about and then those cards tend to be at the show next time. Or at least they will say they don't have it anymore.

Short answer, they will start bringing that stuff to shows when they are convinced they can sell it.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03580716283983922689noreply@blogger.com
